PUTĀRURU, NZ
Concrete Scanning Ensures Precision Stormwater Connection
When expanding infrastructure, precision is key to protecting existing structural strength. Structure Scanning Services was called to Putāruru to assist with a stormwater upgrade where a new pipe needed to intersect an existing concrete culvert beneath a road.
To connect the pipes, contractors had to cut directly into the culvert's concrete wall. However, slicing blindly risked severing the internal rebar that provides the pipe's structural support.
Using a 600 mm × 600 mm grid scan with our Hilti PS 1000 GPR scanner, we mapped the embedded steel reinforcement in high resolution.
This data allowed the consulting engineer to identify precise cut locations—minimizing damage to the structural rebar, ensuring a secure stormwater connection, and maintaining the integrity of the road above.

WHAKATĀNE HOSPITAL, NZ
Rooftop Scanning
When a telecommunications company planned to bolt heavy equipment to the rooftop of Whakatāne Hospital, precision was essential to ensure the concrete wall could support the load. Structure Scanning Services was commissioned to investigate the wall's internal structure.

Overcoming Site Challenges: The Hilti PS-1000 scanner requires direct contact with concrete to operate accurately. To eliminate air gaps, the builder temporarily removed timber battens and cladding on one wall. On an adjacent perpendicular wall where the rear was accessible, we scanned from behind—leaving the exterior cladding completely untouched.

Maintaining Site Integrity: As soon as scanning finished, the builder reinstated the cladding to keep the hospital roof fully weather-tight.

Key Findings: Our detailed scan report revealed dense internal rebar, providing essential context from a past renovation where an entire floor had been removed years prior.
Armed with clear visual data of the underlying steel, the engineering team could move forward safely with the telco installation.
TUTANEKAI STREET, ROTORUA
Structural Scanning for Earthquake Report
We were engaged by an engineering firm to scan the top level of a three-storey building in Rotorua’s CBD. The third level had been added after the ground and second floors were constructed, and the original plans did not confirm whether reinforcing steel had been installed in the walls, floors, and columns.
Using the latest Hilti GPR concrete scanning equipment and Profis software, we carried out a detailed survey of the structure. The scans confirmed the presence of reinforcing steel within the concrete elements, providing the assurance needed for the earthquake assessment.
A full report was delivered to the client, supporting their structural review and compliance requirements. Our team regularly provides scanning services throughout the Bay of Plenty region.
KAHAROA SCHOOL
Concrete Pool Hatch
At Kaharoa School, we were engaged to scan the pool’s ballast tank lid as part of upcoming maintenance works.
To create a new manhole opening, it was essential to first identify the reinforcing steel within the concrete lid. By accurately locating the reinforcement, the required cut could be made with minimal disruption to the steel, reducing both the cutting effort and any potential weakening of the structure.
Using advanced scanning technology, we were able to generate detailed 3D images that clearly showed the depth, thickness, and exact positioning of the reinforcement, ensuring a safe and efficient outcome.
