What is the Hilti PS 1000 X-Scan capable of?

The Hilti PS 1000 X-Scan is a high-resolution pulse radar system designed to provide a "3D window" into concrete.

Depth: Seeing through the concrete slab

The Hilti PS 1000 we operate is engineered specifically for concrete, meaning its frequency is tuned for high resolution in dense materials.

  • Maximum Depth: The unit can effectively locate objects at a depth of up to 300mm in dry concrete.

  • Device width: The physical device width is 190mm wide, so can get into tight spaces for scanning concrete footings or bridge sidings, next to obstructions like pipes or posts.

  • Multi-Layer Detection: Unlike simpler tools, it can distinguish between multiple layers of reinforcement.

  • Accuracy: It provides depth indication with an accuracy of ±10mm for objects shallower than 100mm

Width and Coverage: Speed on the Ground

The PS 1000 is designed for high-speed data collection.

  • Scan Path: As the scanner is rolled across a surface, it captures a continuous stream of data. A single "Quickscan" can be as long as 10 meters

  • Minimum Spacing: The sensor technology is sensitive enough to resolve individual objects that are only 40mm apart, preventing "ghosting" where two bars might look like one solid mass.

The Grid: Visualizing the 3D Space

  • Grid scans: We can use reference grids (like the PSA 12 or PSA 14). This is performed in the image scan mode, essentially “stitching” the scans/ passes over the grid together. The grid sizes are typically performed on a 600mm x 600mm or 1200mm x 1200mm grid.

  • The Result: By following the grid, the scanner correlates every data point to a specific X/Y coordinate. This allows the unit and the Hilti PROFIS software to generate a 3D volume of the concrete. You can visually see exactly where a post-tension cable curves or where a pipe dives deeper into the concrete slab.

Software and Reporting: Professional Documentation

The Hilti PS 1000 works in tandem with Hilti PROFIS Detection software to turn the scans into clear informative reports.

  • Top-View & Cross-Sections: The software allows to view the scan from the top (as if looking through the floor) or from the side (cross-section) to verify vertical clearance.

  • Exportable Data: We can export detailed PDF or HTML reports that include 2D and 3D visualizations, measurements and coordinates.

  • Traceability: Digital scan records offer a level of accountability and traceability for engineering projects that traditional manual markings simply cannot provide.
